On an app

On a dating app: what to text in Vietnamese

After a match, 'hi' gets nothing. A first message that quotes one precise thing from her profile, in Vietnamese, already sets you apart. These lines cover the first message, the chat that follows and the move to Zalo.

1 line is free below, in full: the moment, the Vietnamese, a pronunciation for English speakers, why it works, the mistake to avoid and what she is likely to say back. Written from real usage; none has been signed off by a native reviewer yet.

  1. The moment

Her third photo has her on a motorbike in Da Lat, and her bio says "ca phe addict".

Tấm ảnh ở Đà Lạt xịn ghê. Mình cũng nghiện cà phê, bạn hay ngồi quán nào?

That Đà Lạt photo is great. I'm a coffee addict too, which cafe do you go to?

tum anh uh da lat sin gay. mihn kung ngien ka fe, ban hai ngoy kwan nao

    Safe

You quote two precise things from her profile and end on an open question, so she has something to answer. Note the pair of pronouns: `minh` for you, `ban` for her. It is the only neutral pair in Vietnamese, the one that assumes neither her age nor yours, and it is exactly what you need on an app where a photo tells you nothing reliable. Writing `anh` (me, the elder) in a first message means deciding on your own that you are the big brother: presumptuous, and wrong half the time.

Do not paste the two details into one block. One sentence of observation, one question, send.

    What she says back

    • Đà Lạt đẹp lắm bạn ơi, mình hay ngồi ở An Cafe với Là Việt á.Green light

Đà Lạt is beautiful, I usually sit at An Cafe and Là Việt.

→ She gave you two names: ask which one she prefers and why, and you have the next ten messages.

    • Cảm ơn bạn hihiShe's curious

      Thanks hihi

→ Polite, but she did not hand anything back: ask one concrete question about the cafe, and do not ask for her number yet.

    • ỪCould go either way

      Yeah

→ The single word means "I am reading without being hooked". One last light, concrete message, then let it go if she stays on one word.

    • (không trả lời)That's a no

      (silence)

→ You send nothing. On an app, silence is a complete answer, and she is entitled to give it that way.
