On an app

Her third photo has her on a motorbike in Da Lat, and her bio says "ca phe addict".

How to say “That Đà Lạt photo is great. I'm a coffee addict too, which cafe do you go to?” in Vietnamese

Tấm ảnh ở Đà Lạt xịn ghê. Mình cũng nghiện cà phê, bạn hay ngồi quán nào?

tum anh uh da lat sin gay. mihn kung ngien ka fe, ban hai ngoy kwan nao

Rough sound, not the tones. Short sentence, and smile.

literally: photo at Da Lat classy really. me also addicted coffee, you often sit shop which?

Why it works

You quote two precise things from her profile and end on an open question, so she has something to answer. Note the pair of pronouns: `minh` for you, `ban` for her. It is the only neutral pair in Vietnamese, the one that assumes neither her age nor yours, and it is exactly what you need on an app where a photo tells you nothing reliable. Writing `anh` (me, the elder) in a first message means deciding on your own that you are the big brother: presumptuous, and wrong half the time.

Careful

Do not paste the two details into one block. One sentence of observation, one question, send.

What she says back

  • Đà Lạt đẹp lắm bạn ơi, mình hay ngồi ở An Cafe với Là Việt á.Green light

Đà Lạt is beautiful, I usually sit at An Cafe and Là Việt.

She gave you two names: ask which one she prefers and why, and you have the next ten messages.

  • Cảm ơn bạn hihiShe's curious

    Thanks hihi

Polite, but she did not hand anything back: ask one concrete question about the cafe, and do not ask for her number yet.

  • Could go either way

    Yeah

The single word means "I am reading without being hooked". One last light, concrete message, then let it go if she stays on one word.

  • (không trả lời)That's a no

    (silence)

You send nothing. On an app, silence is a complete answer, and she is entitled to give it that way.
