Why it works
Doubling an adjective (chậm chậm) softens it: you are asking for 'a bit slower', not correcting her. Almost everyone slows down and warms up, because it means you intend to keep going rather than switch to English.
Careful
Say it smiling. The same sentence with a frown reads as a complaint about her speech.
