Getting her Zalo
The conversation has been good for a few minutes and one of you is about to have to leave.
How to say “Can I get your Zalo?” in Vietnamese
Cho anh xin Zalo được không?
chaw ang sin Zalo dook khom
Rough sound, not the tones. Short sentence, and smile.
literally: give me ask-for Zalo possible not
Why it works
Zalo, not a phone number, and not Instagram. Everyone in Vietnam has it, it is what people exchange with a new acquaintance, and asking for it reads as normal rather than forward. 'Xin' (to ask for) is what makes the sentence polite.
Careful
Ask before the goodbye, not after. Once she has stood up and said 'em đi nha', the moment has closed and pushing it turns a good exchange into an uncomfortable one.
What she says back
- Ừ, anh quét đi.Green light
Sure, scan me.
→ Open your QR immediately. Fumbling for a minute kills it. Message her the same day, not three days later.
- Để em kết bạn anh nha.Green light
Let me add you.
→ Even better, she is doing it herself. Say your name clearly so she can find you.
- Thôi, em ít dùng Zalo lắm.That's a no
Ah, I don't really use Zalo.
→ That is a polite no. Smile, say 'không sao, rất vui được gặp em', and go. Do not offer another app.
